Career Speed Date

Year 10 students spent last Wednesday afternoon speed dating their career. Seventeen industry personnel attend the inaugural “Speed Date your Career” event supported by Southern Downs Regional Council. Students spent 6 to 7 minutes with each one learning all about their careers, how they got there and what their different jobs involve. From 4.00pm until 5.30pm students rotated around the room and speed dated industry representatives including a politician, property developer, town planner, brewer, saddler, media advisor, compliance officer, WPHS, animal trainer, online business and retail business owners.

Mr Michael Bell, Manager of Community Services and Major Projects at the Southern Downs Regional Council commented about the afternoon. “I can certainly say that at my table the students appeared to find it informative and an opportunity to learn about careers that they did not even know existed. I spoke about Project Management and received plenty of great questions from the students. They were engaged and polite in their interactions and I hope they got out of it what they were looking for, particularly around future career aspirations.”

Stanthorpe State High School thanks Jenny Sherrin, Economic Development Officer of the Southern Downs Regional Council for initiating the afternoon. Thanks must also go to the industry representatives who supported this afternoon through their attendance and provision of valuable career information.
