Drama students are learning how to perform in the traditional commedia dell’Arte style. Commedia dell’Atre is a performance style that originated in Italy in the 16th Century. Performers wear masks which represent either masters or servants. Performances are improvised, humorous and involve a lot of audience interaction. The servants (zanis), are not the smartest but they love to please and will bend over backwards (sometimes literally) for their masters. The masters themselves have their own quirky traits. Old and money-hungry Pantalone will try his luck with the ladies. Cowardly Il Capitano will exaggerate his wartime accomplishments. Il Dottore is an expert on everything – trust him he’s a doctor. Look out for them in the Apple and Grape parade as well.
