Fifteen Years of Friendship and Going Strong

Shiwa students make boomerangs with Mr Jono Bushby.

When Stanthorpe State High School hosted a party of ten students and two teachers from Shiwa, Japan last week, it marked the fifteenth consecutive year of this exchange. What began as an extension of the sister city agreement between our local government bodies has grown into a deep and abiding friendship.

As has become part of the tradition, Shiwa students delivered a fascinating presentation about a slice of life in their community – this year focusing on how they spend their precious leisure time. As ever, all Stanthorpe High students had the chance to see the presentation and appreciated this little window into Japanese culture.

For their part, the Shiwa students made ANZAC biscuits and boomerangs, attended classes and enjoyed tasty food at the QCWT, Suttons and at our farewell BBQ. Special thanks to Mary Findlay, Director of Stanthorpe’s Regional Art Gallery, who stepped in at short notice to guide students in an exclusive preview of the LAF Out Loud exhibition when bad weather prohibited the planned excursion to Donnelly’s Castle. Thanks also to our fabulous hosting families and Stanthorpe State High School staff who make the annual hosting event possible. We look forward to renewing the friendship next February!
