Mathematical Orienteering

Tash Lampson determines her direction using a compass

The Year 11 Prevocational Maths students have been challenged recently to use their measurement and estimating skills when they completed a practical orienteering activity for assessment. They had to find their way around a course using a map and orienteering compass then to calculate distances using pacing and a predetermined pace length. After all, how often do we carry a calculator in our back pocket when we are exploring! The activity also showed that maths can be applied to lots of life experiences, even sport.
