New Generation of Rural Fire Fighters

Michael Fermor receiving his certificate.

Last term saw the end of an intensive 17 week training program for 16 students from Year 12.

100% of the students enrolled in the course successfully completed their Certificate II in Public Safety (Firefighting Operations) with the Queensland Fire & Emergency Service.

Comments from Mr Massey, First Officer, Sugarloaf Rural Fire Brigade, Air Observer South West Region. “I would just like to say a few words in support of this year's group of students.

The Brigade members who assisted in the training of this year’s group of students believed them to be the best group of students so far. This was also echoed by the staff from Toowoomba who gave the students a very interesting and fulfilling experience. Thank you Mr Garven and your fellow training officers.

A big thank you must go to Mr Bau (Group Officer) who ensured that everything ran smoothly from one week to the next. As this is the third year of this programme I believe it is a credit to both the students and those who trained them each week.

From my point of view as a ‘First Officer’ it has not been difficult, as each week both Mr Pickering & Mr Hill have said they are available for the following week. Considering the fact they are giving up virtually every Thursday for 17 weeks means they have not felt they are wasting their time and that the students have appreciated and enjoyed the interaction. I am sure that the other Brigades who assisted with the training would also echo these sentiments.

We, naturally as Brigades, believe that the training of young people is essential for the continuation of the Rural Fire Service and the protection of our district, without younger members following in the footsteps of older and experienced Fire Fighters and learning from them, our districts safety is at great risk.

We look forward to this programme being continued in 2015 and allowing even more young people within the community to experience the satisfaction of contributing to their community , the pleasure of being part of a team and the comradery and satisfaction that comes from knowing you have done something worthwhile.

Congratulations Students.”
