Students learning about tyre maintenance

Students learning about tyre maintenance

Do you know how to break safely to avoid an accident? Forty novice Year 12 drivers do.  The students attended the lifesaving Safe Drive Defensive Test Drive on Thursday 22nd October. The course is a mixture of theory, discussion and hands-on driving in specially modified vehicles. Students learnt how to look after their vehicles to minimise accidents and the contributing factors in crashes. Despite some wild weather at the end of the day students learnt and practised threshold braking, skid prevention and reactive car control skills. One student was very thankful for the training as she tested her new skills in a real life situation the next day.  When Hannah Smith drove to school the following morning a kangaroo jumped into her path on a gravel road.  The skills she learnt prepared her to execute a textbook threshold brake.  “Because I practised the day before I knew what to do and I was also surprised at how calm I was afterwards,” Hannah said.  “It was definitely worth attending.”
