Students get global

Students: Cody Guaragna, Ed Filmer, Kaine Doorley, Cooper Smith, Thomas Evans, Ana Kaufusi , Hannah Evans, Stephany Lockwood, Jacqueline Blake.

Year 9 students recently took a virtual tour of our solar system.  They spent a day in Brisbane viewing different images of our Universe as part of the Global Investigations course.

The day started with a visit to the Science Centre exploring mathematics and physics concepts where they were surprised to be joined by students from Severnlea State School.  A highlight was Michael Benson’s stunning photographic exhibition “Otherworlds: Visions of our Solar System” at the Queensland Museum. The huge photos depicted landscapes of planets in our solar system as they might look if students could visit them in person.

After lunch the class visited the Cosmic Skydome at Brisbane Planetarium. Students were enthralled by the show “Cosmic collisions.”  Like a blockbuster Hollywood movie, the show revealed how destructive cosmic collisions release energy that drives the growth and evolution of the universe, shaping our place within it.
