Writing your own Year 12 story

1/02/2018
Staff and students both enjoy and benefit from the Year 12 conference.
Year 12 is sometimes daunting. The fear of what the year will bring, being accepted into uni, finding a job and even just juggling assignments and exams that always seem to be due at once!

Year 12 Level Co-ordinator Kate Dearden, organised a conference for all Year 12 students at Stanthorpe State High School to attend last Wednesday at the QCWT. Her difficult task was to provide help and assurance to overcome these fears and ensure all Year 12s have a great year and are prepared for whatever the future holds.

Students Brielle Williamson and Ellice Orreal set the mood for the day providing inspiration. Principal Mr Peter Grant followed on by asking each student to “write their own story” by not letting their past write their future. What else happened at the conference?

  • Students learnt about the 3rd Space, ways to meet challenges, and developing a growth mindset.
  • Students found out a little more about each other with group activities and realised that their own challenges were actually everyone’s challenges and they were not alone.
  • Students met support staff from the school and learnt the ways in which they can be supported by them.
  • Students heard from past students to find out what life is like post Year 12.
  • Students completed personality profiles and discovered their individual personality style line-up and how they viewed the world.

Upon leaving the conference, students were asked to place on post it notes what they would take home from the day. Comments included –

  • “I enjoyed what to expect in Year 12 because it will help me to prepare for the year ahead.”
  • “I enjoyed the environment and the positivity around the room.”
  • “I liked the interactive parts.”
  • “I learnt that there is always going to be someone there for you at school.”
  • “I still need more experience speaking to a large group.”
  • “I liked the stories of how past people got to where they are today.”
  • “I enjoyed learning about who my class mates are.”
  • “I learnt there are many courses out there.”
  • “I learnt to have a mind that grows.”
  • “I liked completing the personality quiz to discover who I am.”
  • “I learnt to never give up. Just dream big and slowly climb up until you get there.”
  • “It provided brilliant information from multiple speakers. It was engaging and informative. Thanks”

Thanks must go to Kate Dearden for organising the conference. Also to all the guest speakers and past students – Lauren Tulloch (helloworld), Brianna Woods and Drew Simpson (QCWT) as well as all the teachers who attended and assisted throughout the day. The Year 12s are ready for a year to remember!
