Year 10s introduced to Engineering

Josh shovel

A group of Year 10 students have been busy at the Granite Belt Border College of Trades. The Folding Shovel that Josh Clarke is holding in the photo is a project which aims to induct students into the engineering workshop. It integrates a range of hand skills and machinery operations.  Josh was required to use a lathe and milling machine to fabricate the bolt and handle, cut the shovel head using an oxy-acetylene system and MIG weld the mounting bracket to the shovel head. Students have also spent much of the year practicing both Manual Metal Arc Welding (stick) and Metal Inert Gas welding (mig).  This has included a range of welding positions and operations including lap seams, pipe to plate, outside corner and pipe butt welds. Josh and the other students are proud of their product.
