A two-year course of study leads to the Queensland Certificate of Education and/or a Senior Statement. There are two semesters in each of year 11 and year 12. Students can choose either an Authority pathway (ATAR) or a Vocational Education and Training pathway (VET).

Students must choose English or Essential English and General, Essential Mathematics or Mathematical Methods. All other subjects are optional. A student must choose six subjects each semester in the Authority pathway or six subjects in the Vocational Education and Training pathway, unless undertaking a part-time traineeship. In this case, the number of subjects will be negotiated.

Certification

Students in Queensland are issued with a Senior Education Profile upon completion of year 12. Included in this profile could be:

Senior Statement

A transcript of the learning account for all students completing year 12 at a Queensland school. The Senior Statement shows all studies and the results achieved that may contribute to the award of a QCE or Tertiary Entrance Statement.

If a students has a Senior Statement, then they have satisfied the completion requirements for year 12 in Queensland.

Queensland Certificate of Education

The Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) is Queensland's senior school qualification, which is awarded to eligible students, usually at the end of year 12. The QCE recognises broad learning options and offers flexibility in what, where and when learning occurs.

Further information can be found at the QCAA Website.

Choosing subjects

It is important to choose senior subjects carefully as your decisions may affect not only the types of occupations you can follow later, but also your success at school and feelings about school as well. Even though there are many factors to consider, choosing your course of study can be made easier if you go about the task calmly and logically and follow a set of planned steps.

As an overall plan, you are advised to choose subjects:

  • which you enjoy
  • in which you have an ability (check your year 10 report that lists your achievement levels in each subject)
  • which help you reach your chosen course or career
  • which will develop skills, knowledge and attitudes useful throughout life.
