Stanthorpe State High School is a school of some 730 students from years 7-12 situated in Stanthorpe, on the Granite Belt.

The school has always combined a respect for tradition with innovation and community involvement. The house teams, named after local identities Withers, Wright, Langan and Finch and the school motto, Altiora Petentes (striving for higher things) have been with the school since 1962 and represent its traditions.

The school community espouses conservative values, and these are reflected in the traditions, values and rules of the school. The school has a well developed behaviour management plan (PDF, 607 KB) which has clearly defined expectations and consequences. The plan includes a strong emphasis on the wearing of school uniform.

The school has a strong reputation for innovative and progressive programs and is a leader in a variety of fields, including agriculture, vocational education, Italian immersion and student welfare.

Complementing the comprehensive academic program, the school offers a rich and diverse array of extra-curricular programs, including a strong emphasis on activities that develop student leadership.

The local community

The Granite Belt is predominantly a farming community with a population of approximately 11,000. In recent years there has been significant advancement in the wine and tourism industries. The nature of primary industry is predominantly horticulture – deciduous fruit and vegetables, with pastoral industries making up a smaller part.

Stanthorpe has a large, well integrated Italian population which has been added to, particularly in the last decade, with increasing numbers of families and individuals from the full range of cultural groups.

The area has a low socio-economic index by Queensland standards. In comparison with larger centres there are few support services available locally.
